Nokia SILTA 5G - A bridge for the community of Helsinki

About this project

WHERE DO YOU FIND THE ESSENCE OF A CITY?

We believe that a city is not defined by its architecture or parks, but by the inhabitants that make the city breathe through their culture and experiences in Helsinki. Therefore, we‘ve drawn inspiration not just from significant buildings and nature, but from the people that live, eat, and breath Helsinki. The 5G network is a result of demands from the people, so should the design of its base stations.

To craft a holistic design for a city, you must not only ask the people how they perceive their environment but also which elements resonate with them. What sense does it make if public infrastructure is encased in polished steel if the citizens don‘t identify with it? In our opinion, the design should be recognizable but naturally fitting in at the same time: a balance of accuracy and celebration. We hope by centering the process around citizens of the city, that the result will resonate with the people who see it in their everyday life.

AN EXPANDABLE APPROACH

We use efficient tools to collect and synthesize user data. To inform the design of this element for each city in the world, we would use our “survey app“ to create a survey asking people of helsinki what they think about their city. Thus, we create a multi-sensory urban footprint to map out the subjective elements that make up a city. This becomes a useful tool to gauge which sights, sounds, tastes, shapes, textures to capture through the custom element of the base station.

Our design incorporates a customizable element to personalize the 5G base station to fit any target city, while the majority of the unit maintains a consistent design. The custom element gives the overall design a unique identity, no matter if the base station is installed in Helsinki, Rio de Janeiro or Cape Town. Our strategy is personal, yet expandable and allows Nokia to adapt and scale their product to fit any city in the world.

Our concept is called "SILTA 5G" because it should be the bridge connecting people with each other and their city. We are aiming for close collaboration with city councils and local material suppliers worldwide to help NOKIA find the best solutions for any location.

LET´S SHAPE THE WORLD TOGETHER.

Our Proposal

Need: which problem(s) does your proposal solve?

Our concepts aim to solve the problem of misinterpretation the people's needs and desires when they think of their city. The look of a city does not always represent the citizens' mindset. In our opinion imposing a technical, minimalistic design made of materials that fit the current city appearance is not contributing to the urban development. For example how could a casing made of steel improve the feel of a city if all buildings and public items are made of raw steel?

We want to help city planners and Nokia shaping the public environment together with the people that form the soul of a living space.

Approach: how does your project solve the problem(s)?

Through our survey app, we would filter the public perception of a city together with Nokia and the local city council to contribute to the design process for the 5G base stations. Using this tool we are able to create a personal sensory footprint of any city in the world and gain insights into materials and colors that address peoples´ feelings when they think of their living environment.

This way we are able to create an adaptable design concept that has certain customizable elements next to a consistent main module. The color and materials of these parts are inspired by the sensory urban footprint.

Alternatives: what other alternatives could solve the problem(s)?

If a customizable design would turn out to be unattainable for production we as a consulting agency would sit together with the city council and Nokia to collaborate on new solutions for a better living environment.

Benefits: what are the benefits of your proposal?

The SILTA 5G concept avoids imposing a design on a current city appearance that doesn´t reflect the true desires and needs of the locals. It provides customizability through a participatory design process that considers the mindset and culture of a city´s residents.

Advantage: what gives your project the competitive edge?

Our concept is unique because it provides Nokia with the possibility to react to any city´s desires and needs in terms of designing products for public spaces.

The SILTA 5G is not yet another meaningless box in the city appearance but more a respondant bridge that make the people feel connected to each other and their environment.

Prospective Partners: what might you expect from prospective project partners?

Other municipalities could participate to create an agile, holistic approach to expanding the 5G network. Our tools make this simple
