UrbanSense 5G Edge Computing Challenge

Come and pilot your innovative edge computing solution in a real-world environment. Does your company have data and an idea that you’d like to pilot on an edge computing platform? Now you have an opportunity to test it out in a real-life environment and receive sparring for the further development of your idea. The Edge Computing Challenge will procure multiple experiments with a total value of EUR 12,000 divided between participants. The aim is to find three experiments or divide the budget based on the decision of the judges’ panel. The progress of the experiments is reported in three phases. The competition is aimed at both companies and students.

The open call for tenders is open until 2.3.2020 and you can apply using this form.

The selected experiments start no earlier than 2.3.2020 and finish no later than 13.5.2020

The Edge Computing Challenge

Develop and test the market with an innovative use case utilising edge computing technology on the mobile telephone network.

Your solution can be a prototype, a demo, and idea or a concept that is documented comprehensively enough to enable further development with the pilot offering. The experiments can make use of data from different sources. How does your solution contribute to the development of new smart city services? What might we learn during the experiment?

The pilot platform is ideal for real-time streaming, such as live video, audio and text streaming. The platform also processes IoT data and virtual XR and AR/VR data.


Which service does your edge computing service tackle?

  • The service requires low network latency to function properly.

  • The service helps achieve significant cost-savings by processing data locally instead of uploading it elsewhere (to the cloud) for centralised processing.

  • The service processes sensitive data locally and produces anonymous data that can be stored and further refined.

  • The service supports a local function that can be carried out independently without a constant network connection.

The data centre services for the Edge Computing Challenge are provided by Telia. Telia’s data centre services offer cost-efficient service scalability and extensive functionality.

The Challenge offers participants an opportunity to develop their solution on a 5G network.

The following are considered advantages:

  • The proposed solution utilises the challenge offering.
  • The proposed solution offers new services to the residents of Helsinki or the City of Helsinki.
  • The proposed solution utilises the features of the edge computing platform.

We appreciate solutions with high novelty value and impact. Solutions with high novelty value also include proposals that utilise existing solutions in new ways.

Evaluation criteria

The open call’s judges’ panel will evaluate proposed solutions based on the following criteria:

  • the proposed solution’s applicability to the challenge
  • the innovativeness/novelty value of the proposed solution
  • good usability and customer-oriented implementation
  • good business potential and scalability.

The judges have the right to emphasise the evaluation criteria as they see fit, while maintaining intercomparability.

The pilot programme involves procuring experiments, not the technology or other assets, etc. that make them possible. As such, the conductor of the experiment shall retain all intellectual property rights, etc. related to the experiment.

The challenge organiser reserves the right to change the rules of the challenge by announcing the changes on the challenge website.

Who can create a challenge?

  • If you want to publish a challenge on the NokiaPartners - Open communities and get support from the community to solve your problems, you first need to be registered on the platform. Then you need to contact the NokiaPartners - Open communities administrator in the Community section. They will create the challenge for you. Search for “admin” in the Community section, and click on “Nokia Admin” to contact and ask for your challenge to be created.

 

How do I submit an answer/proposal?

  • To contribute to a challenge, first open the challenge page, and then click on the "start proposal" button on the right-hand-side. A new page will appear with different text fields to fill in and attachments to include. You can also link to an existing project you have previously created on the platform. Once you have finished, click on submit.
  • If you save as draft, your submission will not be completed and will not be submitted to the challenge owner.

 

What happens once I submit?

  • Once you have submitted your proposal, your ‘Challenge Submission Form’ becomes accessible by the creator or the challenge, who can see and edit your proposal. Through the challenge page, only the owner of the challenge can see the different proposals submitted against his/her challenge. It is up to the challenge owner to inform participants about decisions and potential next steps.
  • To note, when you save a submission as draft, it is not submitted to the challenge owner.

 

Who can see my proposal?

  • The owner of the challenge, the submission review committee, and the NokiaPartners - Open communities Administrator team are the only ones who can see your proposed ideas and solutions to the challenge.

 

What happens if my proposal is successful?

  • For each challenge, submission review and selection process is different and the responsibility of the challenge owner. If your project is selected, the owner of the challenge will come back to you with further guidance on the next steps.

 

What happens if it is unsuccessful?

  • For each challenge, submission review and selection process is different and the responsibility of the challenge owner. If your project is not shortlisted, the owner of the challenge will inform you using the messaging features of NokiaPartners - Open communities. Your proposed ideas will then be removed/deleted from challenge submissions.
