Open Call for 6TIME: CARBON NEUTRAL TOURISM experiment challenge.

Carbon Neutral Tourism challenges companies to promote digital solutions for sustainable tourism through experimentation. Does your company or team have a data collection or artificial intelligence innovation that you would like to pilot?

Call for the challenge is open until 17th January 2021. The offer form can be found here.

The winners of the competition will be selected for a pilot program with a maximum value of € 8,000 per track. A total of three experiments will be selected (3 x € 8,000 € 24,000 in total). The experiment will be purchased as a small purchase.

Experiment: Tourist mobility data

6Time: The Carbon Neutral Tourism project is looking for solutions to collect tourist mobility data. The aim is to find a new type of digital solution or service to try, which will make it possible to find out the arrival route of tourists to the destination and the means of transport used for arrival as automatically as possible.

The collected data can be used to promote sustainable service development and mobility service choices, measure the tourist's carbon footprint and steer the tourism industry in a more sustainable direction. In the challenge, people are interested in the data on the movement of tourists and the means of transport used on different arrival routes, for example to Helsinki, Tampere and Turku and the tourist destinations in them (eg hotels, tourist areas, places to visit).

Experiment: Innovative AI solution

Develop a solution for how data sources are processed into information on the carbon footprint of tourism and compiles guidelines for sustainable development for the development of both urban and nature tourism. Artificial intelligence can be used to better design services that support sustainable and safe tourism. For example, a city tourism operator may receive proposals at the destination area level while a tourism company may receive sustainable development proposals for operational activities. What will we learn during the experiment?

To our advantage, we consider:

● We appreciate experiments in which the given data sources are combined in many ways.

● Data sources other than those listed here can be used in the experiment, so that the data sources are documented.

● We value experiments in which the availability of a data source and the scalability of the solution are enabled.

● Compatibility of the solution with Azure environment.

How to join?

● The best entries will be selected for a pilot (experiment) program where winners will be able to try out their solution. The trial will be purchased as a small purchase.

● We appreciate a solution with a lot of novelty value and significance for the theme of sustainable tourism. There is also novelty value in the output, which has utilized previous solutions in a new way.

● You can participate in the competitions using the online form on January 17, 2021 until 24:00.

● The duration of the trial program is determined by the jointly agreed program, eg 3-4 months and max 6 months.

Evaluation criteria

Bids will be evaluated on the following criteria on a scale of 1-5 and with input values of 1-5. each item is evaluated separately.

  1. The relevance of the experiment to the challenge
  2. The innovativeness / novelty value of the experiment
  3. Usability and customer-oriented implementation of the experiment
  4. The business potential of the experiment and the scalability of the solution.

The jury has the right to emphasize the selection criteria as it sees fit, while maintaining mutual comparability. The panel of experts reserves the right not to select any service provider.

6Time: The Carbon Neutral Tourism project will implement a new data-driven operating model between the cities of Helsinki, Turku and Tampere and various tourism actors, as well as digital tools to promote carbon neutrality and better energy efficiency in the tourism sector. There is a need for the tourism industry as well as public actors to find smart solutions for data collection and utilization.

During the project, appropriate metrics will be developed, relevant data sources will be developed and combined, these will be compiled into a common data repository and data will be transformed into usable and easily accessible information through intelligent solutions. This information will be used to make the necessary changes to reduce emissions from the tourism sector.

The experiment offer form can be found here.
