The Nokia Power of Saving Lives

An earthquake, a severe storm, a big fire or a flood – These are catastrophes that happen and that we read about almost every day.

Have you ever thought about how mobile communication technology can support rescue and emergency teams in the event of a natural disaster or civil emergency?

Everyone faced with major disaster must cope with similar difficulties: infrastructure collapsed, roads inaccessible or damaged, bridges destroyed, communication networks not working. All this making it challenging for rescue teams to assess the situation and provide aid where it is most needed, and that delays help. Nokia creates the technology to connect the world and we recognize that we have a responsibility to apply technology to do good, to enhance people’s lives and to support the UN sustainability goals. One example how we do this is the Nokia Saving Lives project.

Nokia Saving Lives is a non-profit and free of charge initiative to demonstrate how innovative technology can support emergency teams during disasters. In this initiative Nokia brings a highly portable, completely self-sustained drone-network-server solution to improve situational awareness in disaster areas to emergency teams. Additionally, the initiative supports Nokia employees to become aid volunteers and operate the solution.

The technical solution can be operated anywhere, comes with its own portable LTE network (based on Nokia Ultra Compact Network), a portable high-performance server and a fleet of drones equipped with cameras or sensors and connected over the same LTE network. The Nokia Drone Networks solution enables in the disaster area fast setting-up, almost instant data availability, advanced analytics, mapping functionalities, secure and reliable video streaming, and upon return cloud-based back-up and remote maintenance capabilities.

The benefits of the technology used in Nokia Saving Lives are an improved situational awareness faster and at lower costs: High quality aerial video provides a far better overview of the situation than is possible from the ground, less costly than from a helicopter and better connected to a local server. The operators of the solution are fully included in the emergency organization. Based on this, rescue teams can be quicker guided to places where they are needed the most.

The first deployment of Nokia Saving Lives will be in the Philippines, as part of an implementation project with Philippine Red Cross and Smart Communications. The Nokia Saving Lives project in the Philippines is supported by GSMA Mobile for Development Disaster Response Innovation Fund.

Nokia Saving Lives - We call it tech for the good of all.
