AI for Bluetooth challenge – what is it about?
Nokia is looking for AI solutions to improve the accuracy of Bluetooth location detection.
Currently, it is possible to use Bluetooth, radio propagation and triangle measurements to determine the location of an object up to around 5 meters.
Nokia would like to know if this accuracy could be improved all the way to 1 metre. The solution could be a learning machine that compares and learns from two sets of data: the low-accuracy location data collected from current best in class implementations, and exact location data measured manually.
What could be the real-life applications of a successful solution?
The difference between 5 meters and 1 meter is particularly significant indoors. In practical terms, the improved accuracy would mean that the location of an object – or a person carrying that object – could be determined not only by room, but by an exact corner in that room.
This level of location detection could be beneficial for many kinds of applications, ranging from job safety to commercial messaging. Imagine a team of firefighters trying to rescue a collapsed colleague inside a burning building filled with smoke, or a department store manager wishing to offer their customers more information about the items they are currently browsing. In both cases it would be important to know not only the approximate but the exact location of a person.
Who can send a proposal?
Nokia welcomes proposals from anyone with a suitable solution: academia, students, startups, growth companies etc.
What’s in it for me?
All proposals will be evaluated and the best ones can become parts of Nokia’s customer pilots.
When is the deadline?
The challenge welcomes submissions until 15 June 2018.
