With the world’s urban population currently standing at 3.7 billion people and expected to double by 2050 the trend towards urbanization continues to accelerate.
The profound implications of this global move towards urban concentration require a new way of operating, with new ideas, new knowledge and new technologies.
Governments, companies, and society in general are consequently all embarked on a journey to transform the city-level problems into new opportunities for a smarter, safer and greener environment. Information and communication technology being one of the key driver in this equation, the public, private and non-governmental organizations need to collectively define the best ICT elements to realize the smart city vision.
This paper presents the four building blocks of a smart city’s ICT infrastructure which enhances the way each city will operate and evolve - an investment for today and the future.
